A light snow was falling as I pulled into the parking area for the Beaver Meadow Trailhead shortly after 4am.Although it was forecasted to clear, I was still concerned that it would remain too cloudy for a good sunrise. Getting up early is probably my least favorite thing about being a landscape photographer and at times my attitude can be less than upbeat during predawn hikes.
As the trek gained altitude my pessimism faded away and I let out an uncharacteristic hoot of excitement as I spotted a clear horizon in the eastern sky.Even if it remained cloudy above, light from the rising sun would illuminate the air below.I looked up, and though there was a sky full of clouds, there were breaks that revealed the starry night. All the ingredients were there for an absolutely epic light show.
I usually have an image in my mind when I plan a shoot. In this case, I had scouted the location the week prior, and had envisioned the peaks that surround the meadow illuminated by first light. When I broke out of the trees into Beaver Meadow, I was disappointed to discover the summits socked into the clouds. As I was setting up it quickly became apparent that the show was going to be in the eastern sky.I scanned the landscape for compositions as the sky began to glow orange with the rising sun. That is how it usually happens; I have a plan in mind that quickly goes out the window when nature does what it wants.
